Operation "Eat Less, Move More" commences!

Above: The Porters, as seen by our Wii Fit. (Note the Wii-gut action on the parents.)

January 1, 2009

NEWSFLASH:  the Porters are overweight. The Wii Fit said so. And, um, it's kinda obvious just looking at us. (By the way, we are celebrating that the Wii didn't call us obese.)

We know that we are overweight. And, we have really bad self control. So, what is a better way to motivate ourselves into trying to get healthier and losing weight than
to SHAME OURSELVES PUBLICLY ON THE INTERNET?

While we are brave enough to declare on our Blog that we're FAT and that we are going to try to do something about it, we are too big of weenies to admit how much we weigh. But, we will share a few statistics with you that the Wii told us:

Travis:
BMI: 29.97 (22 would be ideal)
"Wii fit" age: 30 (10 years less than actual age, good for him!)
Goals:
  • Lose 20 pounds in 6 months.
  • Cut the Diet Coke and donut habit.
  • Look like Michael Phelps by swimsuit season.

Michele:
BMI: 28.6 (22 would be ideal)
"Wii fit" age: 45 (9 years more than actual age. Man, that stings. What the hell are they measuring? I exercise more than Doughboy there!)
Goals:
  • Lose 15 pounds in 4 months.
  • Eat more plants.
  • Use less cream in my coffee.
  • Move more—walk at lunch, use the Wii Fit, start using my gym membership.
  • Run the NYC marathon in 2043.

In the coming weeks and months, we will post our progress: our BMI stats, and how much we've lost or gained, and various observations and rants.

Stay tuned! Comments are welcome. Encouragement is appreciated!

P.S. The homemade gourmet macaroni and cheese we had tonight isn't helping, is it? Whoops. Tomorrow is another day...

I really have to disagree that the Porter's are tubby but loved the article. I am very interested in watching your progress.
Maybe if I make a public shame announcement, I could do it too! Too bad that I am craving a donut at this very moment!!

    Where there's a Wii there's a Way.

Good luck guys, just keep moving, if you skip a day it's no biggie, the person buying the groceries needs the real willpower, and get a body fat scale so you know when your fat turns to beef.

Follow your dreams, you can reach your goals. I'm living proof. Beefcake. Beefcake!!

So this might be one form of community engagement - your engaging your online community in supporting your goals. It's certainly a community I should join myself. We've got a whole semester to work on it. HMMM, maybe this could be an extra credit grade we give each other. Looking forward to having you in LIS490CEL and supporting your learning AND life goals!

I suppose it could be a form of community engagement. If by community engagement, you mean shaming ourselves publicly. Just curious, how did you find our little family blog? I'm looking forward to LIS490CEL as well! Talk to you soon. Travis

Well, I wish I could dazzle you with my brilliant online research techniques, but you're probably just worried I'm a professor-stalker! (I'm not!) The truth is...you have a link to this blog from your UIUC bio. I was reading up to see what kind of things students are doing and interested in since I'm still redesigning the class.

Ahh, I forgot about that. Not worried about the professor stalker thing. I just dig it when people actually look at our page.

Dear Porters as a truly fat person I am quite offended at your suggestion that either of you are overweight. If thin people like yourselves are trying to move in on all the perks that us big folks have, what will be left for us. I demand that you cease and desist this talk of being overweight or I will be forced to file suit and shut this whole thing down. I await your response.
